Circumstances which, according to critics, are also reflected in the general spelling performance of German students. The study by Wolfgang Steinig, Professor of German Studies at the University of Siegen, caused quite a stir, among other things. He compared the writing skills of fourth-graders in 1972 with those of 2002 and 2012. He examined several hundred essays on text design, length, vocabulary, spelling and grammar. He was unable to recognize the oft-propagated decline in language. The children nowadays no longer only report on events, they commented more frequently and used significantly more words than in the 1970s. Spelling, on the other hand, had deteriorated sharply. For every 40 words 40 years ago, just under seven spelling mistakes were made on 100 words. In 2002, there were already twelve and ten years later around 17 errors.
