There he mainly draws landscape motifs and rural workers. Back in the Netherlands van Gogh experiences one of the most important phases of his life. In the city Nuenen he paints over 180 paintings. In 1885 he created one of his major works: the potato eaters. When van Gogh is 32 years old, he moves to Antwerp in the Netherlands and later to Paris, where he is closer to his brother and dealer Theo. Under the impression of Impressionism, the then current art style, the painter begins to experiment with colors and different techniques.

With his brother Theo, who runs the Paris branch of the art dealer Goupil & Co., he agrees to distribute his paintings. But Vincent van Gogh can not handle the money he and his brother Theo earn and lives in constant poverty. He moved to Brussels in 1880 to get in touch with artists and to learn painting skills.

Vincent van Gogh decides to move to Paris. Arriving in Paris, the artist tries his hand at different trades. He becomes an assistant teacher, then a pastor, later a preacher, and finally a volunteer in a bookstore, and for a short time begins studying theology, for which he moves back to the Netherlands.

After leaving school earlier than planned, in July 1869 he began training at the art dealer Goupil & Co in The Hague. He is then transferred to the London branch, where he feels lonely and unhappy. On the advice of the citizens of Arles van Gogh is sent to a mental hospital, where he has no choice but to paint self-portraits or the later famous starry night.
